В потоке речи на английском
языке в одной и той же синтагме
ударные слоги произносятся
отчетливо через равные
промежутки времени. При этом
безударные слоги и примыкающие к
ним безударные служебные слова,
независимо от их количества,
произносятся быстро и как бы
мимолетно, не нарушая принятого
ритма. Например:

Я
выстрелил стрелой в воздух. |
В конце синтагмы голос
повышается и выдерживается
небольшая пауза.

I shot an arrow into the air,
lt fell to earth, I knew not where,
For so swlftly it flew, the sight
Could not follow it in its flight.
I breathed a song info the air,
It fell to earth, I knew not where,
For who has sight so keen and strong
That it can follow the flight of a song.
Long, long afterwards, in an oak,
l found the arrow still unbroke.
And the song from beginning to end
I found again in the heart of a friend.
