Множество идиом характерны для английской речи, это слова и варажения изменившие свой первоначальный смысл со временем. Многие устойчивые выражения имеют древнюю историю, однако современный английский продолжает порождать новые идиомы, характеризуя особенности современной жизни и культуры не только англичан, а также других народов использующих его. Ведь английский язык известен многим и давно признан общемировым языком.

Без изучения идиом невозможно полностью овладеть разговорной речью, даже имея неплохую лексическую базу. Ведь идиомы английского или любого другого языка это устойчивые выражения, которые порой невозможно перевести дословно. Ведь отдельные слова, составляющие конкретную идиому, со временем утрачивают свой первоначальный смысл, приобретая совсем другое значение. Поэтому идиомы английского языка переводятся полностью, слова в них приобретают определенное значение только внутри данного выражения.

Многие идиомы английского языка имеют сходство с некоторыми русскими фразеологизмами, но есть выражения совершенно уникальные, значение которых невозможно понять достоверно без ознакомления с основами английской культуры. Именно поэтому каждому овладевающему английским языком необходимо заняться изучением идиом. Идиомы английского языка очень часто употребляются при общении между людьми, в прессе и литературе. Попытка досконально вникнуть в смысл определенной фразы или текста, заставляет ознакомиться с идиомами, запомнить самые распространенные из них, научиться правильно их употреблять.

Знание идиом очень оживляет разговорную речь, делает беседу более содержательной, помогает вербализовать мысли и чувства, правильно понять собеседника. Кроме того, идиомы английского языка постоянно встречаются при переводе, поэтому владение ими необходимо профессиональному переводчику.
