Идиомы английского языка – это устойчивые словосочетания, аналогичные русским фразеологизмам. То есть значение такого словосочетания в целом нельзя определить, руководствуясь значениями входящих в него слов. Из-за этого у человека, не знакомого с большинством английских идиом, могут возникнуть многочисленные трудности с переводом неадаптированной литературы, песен, аудиокниг и недублированных фильмов, каким бы большим и полным ни был его словарный запас. Кроме того, незнание идиом может стать причиной недопонимания во время разговора с носителем языка.

Знание идиом английского языка необходимо изучающему его человеку не меньше, чем знание одиночных слов, фразовых глаголов, грамматических, пунктуационных правил, правил произношения и т.п. Большинство людей сами не замечают, как часто в повседневной речи на родном языке они употребляют идиомы, фразеологизмы, поговорки и пословицы. Эти словосочетания делают речь богатой и живой. Во многом именно отсутствие идиом в речи дает нам понять, что язык, на котором ведется разговор, для собеседника иностранный и не слишком понятный.

Если ваша цель – получение лишь поверхностных знаний о том, как говорят, поют и пишут по-английски, то вы можете проигнорировать факт существования идиом этого языка и обойтись изучением базового набора слов. Если же вы действительно хотите овладеть языком, научиться полностью понимать смысл написанных на нем произведений, говорить с его носителями, не вызывая у них смех и правильно понимая их реплики, то вы обязаны изучить идиомы английского языка.

Из-за большого количества входящих в них слов и непрозрачной связи между ними изучение идиом требует больше сил и времени, чем изучение слов. Английские идиомы лучше учить по одной, стараясь прочувствовать, почему в ее состав вошли именно эти слова. С каждым изученным устойчивым словосочетанием вы будете приближаться к пониманию психологии и мировосприятия людей, говорящих на английском как на родном.
