В лингвистике, идиома – это оборот речи, который употребляют как единое целое. Во многих языках это является фразеологическим сращением. В русском языке, это те фразы, которые употребляются издавна, для определения каких – то ситуаций или описания предмета. С одной стороны, идиома не имеет фактически ничего общего с предметом разговора, но сразу понятно, что имел ввиду автор.

Для тех, кто занимается изучением английского языка на профессиональном уровне, и уже кроме знания грамматики, понимает речь на английском – изучение идиом обязательно. Идиомы - это фразеологизмы, которые носители языка употребляют ежедневно. Они чаще всего не имеют никакого отношения, к смыслу, который несут, однако, именно фразеологизмы можно часто встретить в кино и книгах. Самые популярные из них необходимы к изучению. Человек, который намерен свободно общаться с людьми на английском, с первого раза и не поймёт, о чём идёт речь, если не будет знать популярных идиом.

Во–первых, стоит привести пример популярных среди носителей языка идиом. Фраза “in a nutshell” при дословном переводе означает “в ореховой скорлупе”. На самом деле это показалось бы странным, но англичане довольно часто её используют в смысле - “короче говоря”. Обоснованно, не знающий человек и не поймёт, что иностранец имел в виду.

Во–вторых, идиомы используются не только в повседневной речи. Они также являются частыми и в неадаптированной литературе. Каждый специалист подтвердит, что чтение литературы на английском языке – полезно сказывается на знаниях ученика. Он пополняет свой словарный запас, но к сожалению, трудно понять смысл, когда не знаешь фразеологизмов. Именно своеобразные идиомы придают изюминку слогу автора. Каждый учащийся, который решил профессионально выучить язык, обязательно столкнётся с изучением идиом, и не пожалеет, если познакомиться с популярными фразами носителей английского языка.
